This 44-year-old star of the screen started out in Mexico, with the lead role in “Teresa”, a telenovela. This was in 1989, but it didn’t take long for her to break into American movies. In 1995 she starred opposite another Spanish-Language crossover star, Antonio Banderas, in “Desperado”. Since then, she has played and starred in numerous Hollywood roles, and has earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role, the first Mexican actor or actress to earn the honor. She received the nomination for her work in the 2002 biopic “Frida”, exploring the life of artist Frida Kahlo.
