Carlos Juan Finlay was one of the United States’ great medical pioneers. He studied the yellow fever, a vicious disease that ravaged his community, until in 1881 he correctly theorized that mosquitos carry the disease. Twenty years later, Walter Reed found supporting evidence for the theory and it became accepted knowledge.
